They also used the beans as a form of currency! When European explorers arrived in the Americas, they quickly recognized the nutritional value of pinto beans and began incorporating them into their own cuisines. Pinto beans made their way across continents, becoming popular not only in Latin American cuisine but also in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In North America, pinto beans became especially beloved during the Great Depression when they provided an affordable source of protein for many families. Today, they remain a staple ingredient in Mexican cuisine and are enjoyed worldwide for their versatility and delicious flavor.
