The seeds are native to Asia and have been used in Chinese and Indian cuisine for centuries. Ground mustard seed is made from the crushed seeds of the mustard plant. Mustard seeds are small, round, and hard. They have a pungent flavor that is released when they are crushed or ground. Mustard seeds were first brought to Europe in the early 1600s by English explorer John Tradescant. Tradescant was fascinated by the plants he found in India and China and took back several samples to England. One of these samples was mustard seed. At first, English people were not sure what to do with this new spice and it was not widely used. It wasn’t until the 18th century that mustard seed began to be used more frequently in England. At this time, a new type of mustard was developed that was made from white wine and vinegar instead of water. This new mustard was much milder than the Indian version and quickly became popular. French’s Mustard is one of the most well-known brands of this type of mustard today. Testimonial: “Perfect to kick up homemade sauces” – Sharri
